BEHIND THE WINE
Bin 27 is as well known as Fonseca itself. Although for connoisseurs and collectors the Fonseca house is synonymous with Vintage Port wine, it is actually Bin 27 the wine that most quickly comes to mind of thousands of consumers and Port lovers when they think of Fonseca.
Fonseca Bin 27, launched in 1972, emerged during a pivotal shift in the Port wine market, addressing the growing demand for sophisticated yet accessible wines. Unlike Vintage Ports, which required decanting and were costly, Bin 27 offered a blend emphasising Fonseca's hallmark rich, fruity character, derived from selected reserve wines from the Douro valley. Named after a tradition of using "Bin" numbers for Crusted Ports, it featured a bold presentation with painted lettering, later replaced by a paper label. An instant global success, it was promoted through notable campaigns, including sponsoring a yacht race and producing the world’s largest wine bottle. Today, Bin 27 retains its smooth, vibrant fruitiness, aged in oak barrels for complexity and consistency, offering an approachable alternative to Fonseca’s Vintage Ports, ready to drink and perfect for informal occasions.
